Common Home Security Mistakes to Avoid

Everyone makes mistakes. It’s just part of life. Sometimes we all screw up. Don’t beat yourself up over it, just try to learn from the experience and do better next time. Unfortunately, if you are making mistakes with your home security system, you may get burglarized or worse. One small mistake could cost you a pile of money or even your life or the life of a loved one! Don’t make these mistakes if you can avoid them. Please take these tips as a friendly reminder.

Leaving Expensive Things in Plain Sight

If you drive an expensive car or one that gets stolen frequently, you want to keep it parked out of sight in a garage whenever possible. If you own expensive jewelry, keep it locked up out of sight when you aren’t wearing it. Anything you own that cost you a pile will likely be something a thief would love to steal. If you operate a business where a lot of cash changes hands, keep that cash out of sight and do frequent drops into a safe and daily transfers to a bank. The old adage “Out of sight, out of mind” holds true. If thieves don’t see something they want, they are less likely to steal it.

Purses are a big item that gets commonly left in view. Don’t leave anything of value visible in your car or near a window in your home. The same is true for laptops, iPads, games, and anything else portable and electronic.

Forgetting your Security System Passcode

We all know someone (maybe it’s you) who can’t remember anything unless it’s written down. We all know those people who long ago forgot their passcode, so now they never arm their security system. Don’t let that happen to you. At the very least write that passcode down and then lock than a piece of paper somewhere safe and without too many clues as to what it is. The last thing you want is for a bad person to find that note and then use it to enter your home or business when you aren’t around. After you use that code a hundred times, you will have it down. If you don’t use it very often, keep it in your phone. Put it in your contacts under “Home” or your own name. In there you can put it into the Notes section or something like that. Just don’t make it obvious what the code is for, in case your phone gets stolen or hacked. And lock your phone, too.

Forgetting to Arm Your Security System

This one happens all the time. If you’re having one of those days where nothing is going right, the last thing you want is for your home to get burglarized, too. Always make it a habit to arm then system whenever you leave home.

Not Getting Enough Security in Your System

Yeah, it costs a little bit more to add more sensors or keypads to your system, but it’s worth it in the long run. A lot of people in Denver will neglect to secure their basement or garage when they install a new home security system.  But this is a big mistake the garage is the most common route burglars take into suburban homes. Modern basements that are required to have large windows and window wells (in case there’s a fire and people need to get out quickly) make things easier for a burglar to drop out of sight and then take his time breaking open a window. Sure he might trip that motion sensor if he goes upstairs to open the front door and let his pals in, but the whole system is probably wired in the basement, so if he’s smart, he can probably disable the whole system while he’s down there. Even if you have an older house with small windows in the basement, thieves can still easily kick them in and enter your home quickly. Make sure you get your whole house secured when you buy a security system. This is not the time to be cheap.

Not Having a Home Security System

This may be the biggest mistake you can make with respect to home security. Get a home security system and let it work for you. If you don’t have one, there’s probably almost nothing to prevent burglars from entering your home. Yeah, locks are good and you should have them, but even the sturdiest of door locks is worthless when a burglar comes in through a window. Even with window locks, there’s the old standby of breaking a window or just using a crowbar on the front door. Very few front doors can keep out a determined crook.
